Frequently Asked Questions About Custom Patio Construction
It will depend on your future maintenance needs and design objectives. One advantage of poured concrete, including stamped or colored finishes, is that it provides a smooth, uninterrupted surface and typically has a lower initial installation cost. Large concrete slabs, however, are rigid and are very susceptible to cracking over time as a result of thermal expansion and ground movement. Interlocking paver systems have a higher upfront cost, but they are generally more durable. They are individually installed on a flexible sand-and-gravel base and can better accommodate ground movement, reducing the likelihood of cracking. Moreover, if underground utility work is ever required or individual pavers become damaged or stained, they can be replaced individually without the visible patchwork often associated with concrete repairs.
The foundation of proper patio construction is subgrade preparation and elevation grading. We never build a patio that is completely level. Our construction teams apply a 1% to 2% slope, approximately 1/4 inch per foot, to direct water away from your home's foundation and toward designated drainage areas. For larger layouts or properties with limited drainage space, we can integrate engineered subsurface drainage systems directly into the patio design to ensure proper runoff during heavy seasonal rains.
A typical 3.5- to 4-inch concrete or paver patio is designed for foot traffic and outdoor furniture, but it is not intended to support concentrated structural loads from heavy features. If you are planning to add a solid patio cover, a heavy timber pergola, or a masonry outdoor kitchen in the future, we need to know that during the design phase. Our team will install deep, reinforced concrete footings beneath the future load-bearing posts or masonry walls to properly support those structures. This helps prevent future settling or cracking and ensures compliance with applicable California Building Code requirements.
